How Much Does a Dog Grooming Business Make?

Published averages won't tell you much. Your income comes down to four numbers you control — here's how they interact.

Grooming income varies enormously by location, format, and how full your book is, so an average figure is close to meaningless for planning. What is useful is the arithmetic. Your take-home pay is set by four numbers, and you control all of them.

Lever 1: price per groom

Set by your market, your specialization, and your confidence. Groomers who handle difficult coats and difficult dogs well, and who charge properly for both, sit at the top of their local range. Add-ons priced clearly rather than absorbed quietly can lift the average ticket significantly without adding a single client.

Lever 2: grooms per week

Capacity multiplied by how full you stay. Empty slots are the most expensive thing in a grooming business, because your fixed costs run whether the table is busy or not. Gaps from cancellations and no-shows quietly cost more than most groomers realize.

Lever 3: fixed costs

Rent or a vehicle payment, insurance, utilities, software, and any staff. High fixed costs raise your break-even point and make slow months genuinely painful. This is the real trade-off between a home studio and a commercial salon: the salon can earn more, but it must earn more.

Lever 4: retention

The quietest lever and usually the biggest. A client who rebooks every six weeks for three years is worth many times a one-time groom, and costs nothing to acquire again. Improving retention is generally cheaper and faster than raising prices or adding capacity.

Revenue is not income

Before you count anything as pay, subtract product, laundry, sharpening, card fees, insurance, rent, software, tax, and a monthly amount for replacing equipment. Groomers who skip that last one get an unpleasant surprise the year their dryer and clippers both fail.

The fastest realistic improvements

  • Price add-ons explicitly instead of absorbing extra time.
  • Rebook clients at pickup, while they are happy, rather than waiting for them to call.
  • Enforce a clear cancellation policy so gaps stop eating your week.
  • Track which services actually clear your hourly target, and adjust the menu.
  • Make your care visible during the groom so clients stop shopping on price.

That last point is where GroomTrackr helps. Owners who receive photos, notes, and an honest pickup estimate during the groom come back — and they tell other owners why.
